Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) had a rich and diverse international career as an architect and designer and was a pioneer of modern architecture and design. His architectural work can be seen also in Europe and United States. His work consists of architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware, as well as sculptures and paintings. Aalto’s work has been acknowledged and showcased around the world and he has designed many of the most iconic Scandinavian design pieces.

This tour begins from Iittala & Arabia Design Centre in Helsinki where the story behind the name will come to life. The tour will continue to Petäys Resort later in the afternoon where you can enjoy the serenity of Finnish nature and experience an authentic Sauna experience with a dip in a palju -a wooden hot tub- and of course you will enjoy a lovely dinner in the scenery.

The second day will start with breakfast and an outdoor experience in the pure Finnish nature. The rest of the day will be spent in Iittala Glass Capital which is the center of Finnish glass-making and home to the largest operating Finnish glass factory. There you will observe how an Aalto vase in being made and afterwards you can purchase one from the Iittala Outlet.

Programme

DAY ONE
9:00 Our trip begins from Iittala & Arabia Design Centre Helsinki. The history of Finnish
ceramic art and glass design is now on display for the first time in one collection.
Lunch and time for shopping at Finlayson Outlet, Pentik and Iittala & Arabia Concept Store.
12:00 Guided tours of The Aalto House, the beautiful home of the Aalto family, and the lightfilled
Studio Aalto in Helsinki all year round.
14:30 Departure to Petäys Resort. Petäys Resort is in Hattula, which is 130kms from Helsinki.
Petäys is a beautiful and cozy resort surrounded by the Lake Vanaja and a calming Finnish
forest.
16:00 Arrival and check-in to the rooms.
Lake Sauna and “palju” – wooden hot tub, are ready to warm your body and mind. 3-course
dinner at Restaurant Järvi with lake view.

DAY TWO
Breakfast at the restaurant.
A small forest trip with a guide to help see the forest with new eyes. Making fairy spells,
finding our own strength stone, hugging trees etc. Experiencing the forest as a strength giving
and magical place. The trip ends with a relaxing treatment enjoying nature sounds.

12:00 Departure to Iittala Glass Capital
Design Museum Iittala presents us the history of world famous glass factory and the important
tools and techniques of glassblowing. Exhibition also has a collection of Hackmans finest
cutlery and Pro Arte Pieces made at Nuutajärvi glass factory.
Iittala Glass Capital also holds the biggest Naïve Art Center in Finland, ”Iittalan Naivistit”, with
yearly changing exhibition of the finest pieces of Finnish Naïve Art.
If you’re a chocoholic, Kultasuklaa Chocolate Factory is the place to visit while in Iittala. Other
specialities on the area are Ceramic Shop Anubis, Iittala Outlet, Linnanrouva, Honey Shop
Hunaja-Aitta and more.
Depending on the date of the trip, it’s possible also to visit the still working Iittala factory.
