In Hämeenlinna, you can follow the footsteps of Jean Sibelius from the very beginning. Find the favourite spots and sources of inspiration of our national composer while listening to his music!

Programme

10:00 am
Your tour guide will meet you at the marketplace. In keeping with the theme, you will stop at Café Laurell for coffee and Sibelius cakes.

10:30 am Birthplace of Sibelius
Jean Sibelius was born and spent his youth in Hämeenlinna. The house reflects the time of the master composer’s childhood, with furniture, documents, photographs and objects that tell stories about the life of the Sibelius family in Hämeenlinna. You can explore the house independently. Next, you will continue to the park on foot.

11:00 am Sibelius Park
The first national urban park in Finland, combining natural and cultural landscapes, was founded in Hämeenlinna in 2001. Sit on the park benches that play music by Sibelius and admire the three-metre bronze statue of the composer by Kain Tapper.

12:30 pm Hahkiala Manor House
You will have lunch in the Hahkiala Manor House in Hauho, known for its beautiful baroque-style garden. Jean and Aino Sibelius often visited Hahkiala and enjoyed its hospitality, and there is an excerpt of the Finlandia Hymn written by Janne in their old guest book.

Piano music by Sibelius
After lunch, you will enjoy Sibelius interpretations by pianist Tuomas Nikkanen on the 19th-century Bechstein grand piano in the manor house music room.

3:15 pm Aulanko Forest Park
Aulanko first became famous in the early 1900s as an English-style park, founded by arms manufacturer Hugo Standertskjöld. The national landscape of the Vanajavesi valley, as seen from the beautiful forest of the Aulangonvuori Hill, is said to have inspired Sibelius in his work.

4:00 pm Café Hoffi, Wetterhoff House
You will have time to discuss your day over coffee and cakes. In the Wetterhoff House, you can also visit the postcard shop Korttien talo as well as other craft and gift shops. The shop also has souvenirs related to Sibelius.
